Telescopes in the Park

Telescopes in the Park is an in-person ASSA event being held from 4pm to 8pm on Sunday, 11 September 2022.

Tickets: A pre-booked ticket is required to attend. A no ticket, no entry policy applies. Tickets can only be booked at Eventbrite. No tickets will be available on site.

The event features:

  • Short Talks, Q&A Panel: Two short presentations about stargazing and telescope basics for beginners. Learn about the night sky, how to find celestial objects, what telescope may be best for you, and how to use a telescope. Best of all, you can practise using a telescope after sunset! A separate Q&A Panel session will be available to answer questions about any aspect of amateur astronomy including visual observation and astronomical imaging.
  • Telescope Displays & Demonstrations: Look, ask and learn. See telescopes up close, talk with the owner volunteers*, and see the telescopes in operation after sunset (weather permitting).
  • Telescope Clinic: ASSA members can bring their troublesome telescopes along and let the Scope Doctors diagnose and remedy any issues.
  • Telescope Loan Program. Eligible ASSA members return and collect loan telescopes.
  • Merchandise: Astronomy Yearbooks, Wall Calendars, Moon Charts, Star Charts, Planispheres, ASSA-branded Baseball Caps, Beanies, Badges, etc... will be available for sale over-the-counter. Merchandise is also available to purchase online at:
  • Astronomy Accessories & Books: The Society has a bunch of new & used items to sell or give away on the day. Come along and grab a bargain.
  • Good Company & Conversation: Join in for a relaxing and enjoyable Sunday afternoon and evening. We will even do some stargazing if it's clear!

Venue: The venue is the Adelaide Comets FC clubrooms conveniently located in Ellis Park, West Terrace, on the southern side of Adelaide High School. The venue meets ASSA's requirement for a convenient centrally-located undercover indoor-outdoor facility with free parking, nearby toilets, a bar with hot food, and a lift to get upstairs. ASSA will have exclusive use of the venue including the adjacent grounds, the large function room, and large undercover balcony. Note: the event will go ahead rain, hail or shine. But hopefully lots of shine and fine weather.

Tickets & Costs: A pre-booked ticket is required to attend the event. Ticket numbers are limited. A small fee of $5 applies for individual ASSA members, $10 for all members in an ASSA Family membership (one fee only), $12 for non-member adults and $5 for non-member children (aged 5 to 15 yrs). Children under 5 years of age attend free of charge and do not require a ticket. The fees help cover the cost of venue hire. Approved volunteers for the event and members accessing the Telescope Loan Program may attend free of charge. Please select the correct ticket type when you register.

Food & Drinks: A licensed bar with hot & cold drinks, snacks and hot food is available in the function room and from the large open-air balcony. Hot food options include chicken and lamb shashliks with salad, burger with chips, and vegetarian spring rolls.

COVID-19 Safety Requirements: Please refer to

Volunteers & Working With Children Clearances: * Volunteers supporting this event, whether to display or demonstrate their telescopes or help in any way, will have a current Working With Children (WWC) clearance registered with the Society.
